On Bits and Pieces
Along With Crooked Lines Cycle A
by Mark Escobar
“A man who is well grounded in the testimonies of the Scriptures is the bulwark of the church.”
- St. Jerome
Fr. Mark A. Escobar is such man described above, creating homilies and combining it with Literature, both classic and contemporary. Over the years, his talks on social issues and pressing matters affecting society and the modern man have been very useful to family, friends and parishioners.
Amidst the rush of today’s current trends and up-to-date technologies, people often forget to go back and seek comfort amongst the Scriptures in times of difficulties, struggles and quagmires. While society has changed, propelled by globalized economy and modern technology, some biblical perspectives open up practical and creative challenges in any age. They address the integration of ideals, reflective ministry, and on-going conversation with cultures in the context of church. It is important to see the wondrous gifts, richness in imageries, and meanings of God’s word especially on Sunday celebrations of the Eucharist.
On Bits and Pieces: Along With Crooked Lines Cycle A is a compilation of homilies that attempts to share life experiences in relation to the Word of God. It is a form of sharing that provides a perspective of opening ourselves to others on the reality of God in our respective lives. It is looking at individual’s significance vis-a-vis others where we find the wherewithal to carry on while we shape the dimension of humanity being addressed to our call of discipleship.
The author hopes that On Bits and Pieces: Along With Crooked Lines Cycle A will provide readers with appreciation of literary allusions, historical contexts, or contemporary trends in dialogue with biblical themes. To draw upon the broader perspective of some sparks for homiletic creativity, the author hopes too that this will serve as a connecting link to gospel reflections, e.g. reinforcements of Christian values in different historical and cultural contexts.
